Guided hike to Trollsjön (Rissajaure)

This hike takes us to Sweden's clearest lake. On the way there, we hike through the Kärkevagge valley with its impressive formations after the latest ice age.

The tour begins through mountain birch forest, the path soon takes us up past the tree line and further up into Kärkevagge which means the Stone valley in Sami. The valley is filled with boulders of various sizes some large as multi-storey houses, which gave the name of the valley. At the end of Kärkevagge lies Trollsjön (Troll lake). The lake is incredibly clear and has a depth of 36m and in good conditions you can see all the way down to the bottom. Once at the lake, it is time for lunch and for those who dare a refreshing dip in the clear but ice cold water. The lake's Sami name is Rissajaure which means The lake that sparkles like fire.

During the hike your guide will tell you about the history of the area and about the plants and wildlife that you can find in the mountains.

The tours start at 09:00. The duration is approximately 7 hours.

Walking distance: 12 km. Elevation difference: +/- 400 m.

Recommended minimum age: 12 years.

Included: Guide, transfers from/to your accommodation in Abisko or Björkliden and safty equipment.

  • Time: 9:00 a.m. departure from Abisko (see the exact time of your pick-up location in the booking confirmation)
  • Time required:approx. 5-6 hours
This is the perfect tour for those who love magnificent views and want to be guided over the mountains from Sweden and further down to the fjords in Norway and the North Atlantic. The spectacular scenery that meets us as we head into Norway makes this tour something very special. The Norwegian mountains rise majestically around fjords and lakes and the sea never completely freezes even in winter. For those who like photography, this is a trip you don't want to miss. During the tour, we make a number of stops at especially interesting geological and historical places which provide several opportunities for nature and landscape photography.Along the road there are also remains and monuments from the border guard and the battle of Narvik from the Second World War.The stretch itself is also a historic stretch as the road runs parallel to the Rallarleden, which has remained since the railway was built to be able to transport ore from the mine in Kiruna to the port in Narvik. Now in modern times, Rallarleden is a popular trail for hiking and mountain biking. During the tour, a slightly longer stop is also made for a packed lunch at a suitable place for the day.

The tour departs by minibus from Abisko and continues west along Torneträsk. We then continue across the Skanderna and cross the Swedish-Norwegian border at Riksgränsen and Björnfjäll before we continue down towards the fjords around Narvik and the Norwegian mountain massifs.During the tour, the landscape changes after each curve from large mountain massifs with longer mountain ridges and rocky plateaus on the Swedish side to increasingly pointed peaks and deeper valleys the closer we travel to the sea on the Norwegian side of the border. The vegetation also changes from low birch forest, rice heaths and mountains above tree level to verdant mixed forest by the sea. During the autumn months, you can clearly see the difference in color on trees and vegetation as they start to turn yellow and red earlier at altitude than at sea level. During the tour there is the opportunity to see some of the animal life in the North Atlantic. Several kinds of seabirds, sea eagles, seals, porpoises, killer whales and dolphins live in the fjords, so if we are lucky on the trip, we may manage to see some of these.

This tour is suitable for most people to attend. Note that you need to be able to walk about 500 meters to get to some viewpoints we will stop at. However, the tour is not suitable for children who need a car seat, as the tour is mainly carried out in a minibus.

Packing list:Mandatory:

  • Passport or national ID (we cross the Norwegian border)

Snowshoe hiking in Abisko

Capture the true feeling of a winter landscape in the arctic. Your guide will take you to learn the wintry way of movement with snowshoes. While walking on the snow, you will experience the Abisko walley and the sparkling snow crystals throughout the snowfields.

In Abisko there is a lot of animals that dwell in the birch forest during winter, so the possibility to see a lot of tracks is quite big. Most likely you will see tracks of forest hare, ptarmigan, foxes, lemmings, and if you are lucky you might even spot tracks form a moose.

During the tour we will have a break and enjoy some warm berry juice while the only sound you hear is the sough of the forest and fells. If there is a clear sky you will also get a spectacular view over the lake Torneträsk and the Abisko mountain range which includes one of Sweden’s most famous mountain formations Lapporten which is a U-valley sculptured by the ice age.

Aurora Hiking Abisko × × × × × × ×
Aurora Hiking Abisko

Aurora Hiking Abisko

Join us on a autumn hike trough the beautiful Abisko walley with a chanse to see the northern lights.

This tour is a perfect evening activity for those visiting Abisko during the autumn months.
We hike to nice viewpoints in Abiskodalen and look for the northern lights if the sky is clear, and if there is moonlight you can see one of Sweden's most famous mountain formations, Lapporten, as a massive silhouette in the dark and fantastic reflections in Torneträsk before the ice has settled.

During the autumn months, big changes take place in nature in Abisko. At the beginning of the autumn season, the mountains burst with bright colors in red, orange and yellow, and then the landscape becomes quite dark and barren until the first snow falls and everything sparkles in snow and ice crystals.

The polar night begins in autumn here in Abisko, which means that the sun does not rise above the horizon during the darkest months of the year. So in addition to the northern lights, you can experience other beautiful lights in different colors in the polar sky that only occur during the polar night, even in daytime.

On this hike, we may use snow crampons or snowshoes depending on how the conditions on the mountain look like for the day, and is a decision the guide makes on the same day, just before the tour starts.

Note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and therefore something we cannot guarantee that we will see, although there is usually a high chance that it will occur here in Abisko.

The tours start at 20.00. The duration is approximately 3 hours. The tour includes snowshoes, hot beverages and transfers from/to your accommodation in Abisko or Björkliden. If you wish to join this tour on another time/date than those scheduled, please send an email with your request to aril.p@abiskoadventure.se
